Meet the Family Medicine Residency Program’s class of 2023!

Every year, FHCSD’s Residency Program welcomes a new class of Family Medicine Residents. Get to know them through their individual bios and learn about their past education, interests and backgrounds.

Yasmeen Alhomsy, M.D.

Yasmeen Alhomsy, M.D.California Northstate University College of Medicine

Originally from San Diego, Yasmeen attended the University of California, San Diego where she earned her B.S. in Biochemistry and Biology. In 2020, she earned her M.D. at California Northstate University College of Medicine. She is interested in supporting underserved communities to ensure that all individuals have the health and wellness required to go out and make positive changes in their lives and the lives of others. She also has an interest in women’s health and empowering women in all aspects of their lives. In her spare time, Yasmeen enjoys baking, hiking, graphic design and volunteering with her local youth group.

Josh Bruhn, M.D.

Josh Bruhn, M.D.University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine

Josh is from Ravenna, Minnesota, a rural township about 30 miles south of Saint Paul. He received his B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a minor in Mathematics at the University of Minnesota in Duluth. In 2020, he earned his M.D. at the University of California, San Francisco. According to Josh, “The greatest health professions challenge of the 21st century will be to deliver the powerful toolkit of modern medicine to the most vulnerable among us.” He plans to meet this challenge by practicing medicine in systems that serve patients regardless of their ability to pay. Additional professional interests include obstetrics and global health. In his spare time, Josh enjoys playing piano and guitar.

Mayra Bugarin, M.D.

Mayra Bugarin, M.D.Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Tijuana Facultad de Medicina y Psicología

Mayra was born in San Diego, raised in Ensenada, Mexico, and then headed off to Tijuana where she attended medical school and earned her M.D. at Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Tijuana Facultad de Medicina y Psicología. Afterwards, she pursued a Master of Advanced Studies in Clinical Research at the University of California, San Diego. Her professional interests include HIV medicine, integrative medicine, geriatrics, mental health, community health and underserved populations. In her spare time, Mayra enjoys spending time with family, yoga, meditation and mindfulness, reading, art, archery, hiking and dance.

Lucas Burton, D.O.

Lucas Burton, D.O.Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine - California

Luke is from Northern Virginia and grew up in a small town called Waterford. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he earned a B.A. in History. Afterwards, he attended Georgetown University and received a M.S. in Physiology. In 2020, Luke earned his D.O. at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine. His passion in medicine is meeting and caring for people in need, in addition to MSK/sports medicine, behavioral health and procedures. He enjoys soccer, football, basketball, hiking, working out, going to the beach and spending time with family.

Michael Prestgard-Duke, M.D.

Michael Prestgard-Duke, M.D.University of Utah School of Medicine

Michael was born and raised in Utah and calls Salt Lake City his home. He received his B.A. in Biology from the University of Utah. In 2020, he earned his M.D. from the University of Utah School of Medicine. His passion is underserved medicine, with a specific interest in serving refugees as well as those suffering from housing insecurity. Other professional interests include global health, wilderness medicine and sports medicine. Michael enjoys soccer, hiking, backpacking, camping, biking, climbing, drawing, cooking and travel.

Stephanie Wong, M.D.

Stephanie Wong, M.D.Medical College of Wisconsin

Stephanie is originally from San Francisco, California. She earned her B.A. in Asian American Studies, with a minor in Environmental Systems, and MPH at the University of California, Los Angeles. In 2020, she received her M.D. at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Her professional interests include mental health, public health, complementary and alternative medicine, and underserved medicine. In her spare time, Stephanie enjoys cooking, baking, singing, archery, indoor rock climbing and geocaching.
